Essential oils contain molecules that once applied or dispersed through the air trigger nasal receptors to send healing messages to the brain. The brain then experiences changes of chemistry that tell your body to feel relaxed, cheered or numb to pain.A common physical complaint today is arthritis. A blend of a couple of drops each of clove, ginger and peppermint oils dispersed in eight ounces of a carrier oil such as almond, olive or jojoba can be worked manually into the areas that feel sore. These oils have the effect of cooling hot spots in the body and bringing oxygenated blood to the affected areas. Tea tree oil can also be used along with geranium or lavender oil to heal cold sores. Mixed with chamomile oil it is an effective remedy for eczema.Essential oils are also very effective when it comes to soothing the pain of muscle soreness. In a world short of counsellors should we really be waiting four years to qualify as a therapist? Most disciplines whether psychoanalytical, Jungian, CBT, transactional analysis and many others insist on years of training to become a competent counsellor. I would like to challenge this and some basic assumptions about therapy itself. The FDA announced that the antibiotic Ketek which is used to treat pneumonia must come with a new “black box” warning. The warning comes after the medication has been linked through studies to cause substantial liver damage. The drug has also been limited in the areas it is prescribed for. Ketek is no longer recommended to treat the two milder conditions sinusitis and bronchitis.According to Dr. John Jenkins director of the Office of New Drugs at the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, "The changes are designed to inform health-care providers and patients regarding the safe and effective use of Ketek consistent with advice received from advisory committees in December of last year, the changes are the result of a comprehensive analysis of available data regarding the benefits and risks of Ketek conducted by [FDA] team members."An article from Forbes.com states, “The drug and the related approval process have been dogged by criticism, however. Last June, Sanofi-Aventis agreed to update Ketek's labeling to reflect the possibility of severe liver damage. And last month, a European Medicines Agency panel recommended that Ketek not be given to patients with a history of such liver conditions as hepatitis or jaundice.”On top of all this, the makers Ketek, Sanofi-Aventis, are under investigation by the Senate Finance Committee for cases of fraud discovered during the approval trial as well as another trail filed by the House of Representatives sub committee investigating irregularities in the approv Why the length of time? Well a flippant answer could simply be money. A lot of organisations and personal trainers make a living out of training counsellors. The length of time and the commitment needed by a student can provide a steady income for a long time from relatively few trainees. Most overview organisations insist on so many hours of training, client contact, supervision and conference attendance. If you can afford to pay out for all these things you can become a counsellor. No wonder many noted psychologist’s start their own theory based counselling and start a new trend. You can break away from the original system and start your own little cult of therapy. However the secret to making money is to have the training last as long as possible and have your own pet organisation set examinations by your so-called peers to say whether you have passed their tests (or spent enough money doing so). The current trend is about four years on average; some such as psychodynamic traditional therapy can be many years of training. It is true you can earn money yourself while training by seeing clients and practising your art. This in turn leads to the lucrative practice of supervision which is the most insidious practice of money laundering. (See separate paper on Supervision). It is considered then appropriate to spend this huge length of time learning your trade. When organisations are challenged about this they simply defend the practice by saying we are protecting the public from bad counselling. This in itself is a joke – the worst counsellors I have met had years of training – being a good counsellor or therapist is about personality not training. What makes a good counsellor (therapist)? This question is of course multifaceted, but let’s for the sake of argument keep it simple, as simple is always best. First you need to have a stable personality yourself. This does not mean you are a boring person who sits back and listens to endless clients tell you of their misfortunes. It means in your own life you should be good at coping with adversity. You should be able to demonstrate, not that your life is perfect, but that you can cope with the problems you encounter personally. Second you should be self aware, know your own strengths and weaknesses, do not be afraid to show yourself as vulnerable sometimes. After all a good counsellor is human too. If you give a good prize away, it will bring people to your website. I've run tons of online contests. I've given away everything from DVDs to action figures to comic books to gift certificates. And it always get traffic to my website. There's two basic different ways to run a giveaway. The first is to require nothing, or almost nothing, from those who enter. The alternative is to require some level of participation in your site before they can be entered into the contest. With the first, you may require something as simple as their email address. Perhaps you require that they sign up for your email newsletter. Either way, there's minimal effort for the entrant. The advantage to this method is that a lot of people will probably enter. The disadvantage is that you have no guarantee that they will provide anything but a momentary spike in your traffic. You need to work hard to have great content up at the same time so that they are more likely to stick around.Remember, even if you just collect their email address, that's a good time to offer them a subscription to your email newsletter that you should already be using to promote your site. With the second method, there's a variety of ways to go. It really depends on the nature of your site. You can require that the entrants write a certain number of posts in your forum. Maybe they need to submit an article or review to your site. Also in personal therapy you are encouraged to explore your inner self and your own life. This can be very counter-productive to the new counsellors own well-being. So I will make this bold statement clearly so all who read this understand:Children's audio books on CD were something I'd always regarded with mild suspicion. After all it's not really reading or is it? As a mother and English teacher, not to mention an avid reader myself, I was fully aware of the importance of reading and had always tried my best to instil in my children and students a love of reading but, I still wondered if I wasn't perhaps missing something and decided to investigate the matter further.I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the experts agree - audio books in fact help improve a child's reading!By listening to audio books children are presented with an opportunity to hear language thereby providing them with models for the correct use of grammar and also giving them the chance to hear the correct pronunciation of new or difficult words.Another benefit of audio books is that they can play a vital role in bridging the gap in young children whose understanding and comprehension is greater than their reading skill. Often children who cannot yet read or who are just learning to read become frustrated by their lack of reading ability. In allowing them to "read" along with an audio book this frustration can be avoided as the child feels as though they're actually reading. This is an enormous benefit when encouraging a life-long love of books and reading in the very young.A more obvious, but no less important benefit of listening to stories is that it improves a child's listening skills. More than half of our learning or accumulation of knowledge is achieved t “Personal therapy when you do not need it can damage your mental life!” I make that statement as I say boldly, against all the trends out there that feel you should have your own breakdown in order to rebuild you into a thinking, emotional, empathetic counsellor. I only have one comment on that proposal – rubbish. Counselling is like any other job you can do it without thinking so hard about your own life. It is ironic that in any other job we tell people to keep their personal demons at home where they belong. If on the other hand you have personal issues of such magnitude that you need to see a counsellor yourself then maybe you are not right for becoming a counsellor in the first place. I am not a believer that the best person to understand a junky is a reformed junky. That is the modern joke on our society that we employ the ex-unstable to help the present un-stable. I am not saying these people are not sincere in their effort to help those like themselves but most are really indulging in self-righteousness of the most insidious kind. The point I am really making here is time again. It is another time consuming exercise that for most is unnecessary to do the work. It takes a long time to build up personal therapy hours in order to show you are stable and ready to treat others. This in itself is contradictory in that just because someone has resolved their own issues somehow they are able to then have some insight into other people’s lives. It is like the unmarried Catholic priest advising on marriage when they do not marry themselves, you do not need to talk from personal experience to understand another’s point of view. Many Catholic priests do a very good job of counselling the faithful. I personally may not agree with the doctrine but if you have faith in God then that is the route to your salvation in mental health. I have no problem with that approach. However in the modern God-less world the therapist is often cast into the new priest of the high alter of therapy and theory.
