Most people don't mean to be hurtful, but we seem to be programmed to take notice of anyone who's a little bit different from us. It's probably a left-over survival thing; from when we were less civilised...
But did you also realise that the smallest things can make a difference to how people think of you? And come on, don't we all really want approval when it comes down to it? Let me tell you a true story about a well dressed young man...
The other day I was in my doctor's surgery to get a prescription for a nasal spray I use. As usual I had to wait a couple of minutes and while I was waiting I noticed a very smartly dressed young guy, maybe 25-27, talking to the receptionist. He was clearly selling something and she was listening to him intently.
Now I was watching him intently because he was really well turned out. I mean really well turned out. I especially liked the way he wore his tie which kept him looking businesslike, but was modern and fresh. From where I was sitting he looked every inch a professional.
But the receptionist's eyes kept wandering down. I thought at first she was trying to avoid eye contact, but after she did it a few times I followed her eyes down to his shoes. What I saw actually shocked me. His shoes were awful. They were tattered, dirty and old. I mean, this guy had an expensive suit on and looked a million dollars - until you saw his shoes.

The debate of whether an author or writer of a book should be allowed to write a book review of their own work seems to have been settled. It is now against the social norm for them to opine. Yet why does this rule exist? Literary Critics say Authors should Not be allowed to Write Book Reviews of their work, but why? Could it be that the critics do not want competition?

So what's my point? It's simple. When people are looking at you they will take in everything about you, even if only subconsciously. And it will affect their judgement about you. It got one young man sent away empty handed from my doctor's surgery.
What effect does it have on you?
If you're overweight and like a lot of people, you may not be taking as much care in your presentation as you could - and should - do. Little things can make a lot of difference to how people perceive you. Start with clean shoes!
But you should also make sure your clothes are well pressed. Don't be afraid to go for a colorful flourish if you wear a lot of black.
And most of all hold your head up high and be confident - people will pick up on how you feel about yourself. If you're not comfortable with you, what makes you think anyone else will be.
If you don't care what people think of you then you don't need to worry how they see you. But if you're like most of us, it is important how others see you and treat you - isn't it?
Little things can make a big difference so put your best foot forward and give it a try - you'll be pleasantly surprised with the results!
