Why should I base my visit to the UK in a Forest? The ‘New’ Forest has actually been around for a thousand years, and only about 50% of it is covered in trees. The UK’s newest National Park, it is less than half an hour‘s drive from Salisbury. Great for walking, cycling, bird-watching – fresh air! Like all wild places, the Forest changes with the seasons and hours – its moods change with the light and the British weather. You can see deer, birds, ponies and cattle – even the odd domestic pig from time to time. Unlike the majority of wild places, though, the Forest is very accessible. Beaulieu Road Station is one of my favourite places – park the car or get of the train and you’re already in the middle of nowhere. In an hour you can walk through a number of different habitats from broad leaved woodland and conifer plantations to heathland and marshes.

Brockenhurst, Lyndhurst, Fordingbridge and Lymington are all great places to base yourself – Bournemouth, Southampton and Winchester are superb centres too. So much history, so much to see: all places worth a little internet research! Around the edges of the Forest are some beautiful towns and villages, an outstanding motor museum, the British seaside, Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge: in short lots of great reasons for basing a tour of the south of UK in our area. In July every year there is an excellent Country Show held at Lyndhurst, where visitors from overseas would get a flavour of life outside London!
